Common Sense Self-Defense

By webmistress

The best form of self-defense for anyone is avoiding a situation in which you will have to physically defend yourself. I'm sure there are hundreds of tips and good advice out there to follow, but these are the 3 that make the most sense:

  1. If you have to walk alone, pay attention to the people around you and walk with purpose. Look at people as they pass by to assess them. A possible attacker/thief will always choose someone that looks like an easy target.

  2. If you are walking alone at night, try to stick to well lit, populated places. If you think you are being followed, turn around and check. Let them know that you are aware of their presence. Cross the street or go into a well lit, populated place if you have to.

  3. If you are accosted, do not be afraid to make a scene. Try shouting "FIRE" or "NO" or "HELP". Make a lot of noise to draw attention to yourself.
